Seams of Covenantal Preservation

Abstract
As the hinge of a door provides the turning point on which a door swings, the Gospel
of Matthew presents the covenant promises from Abraham to Jesus in its opening genealogy as
hinging upon the women named in it. These seams act as turning points between the covenant
promises. The five mothers listed in the line of Christ — Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba, and
Mary — act as covenant seams through which the Abrahamic promises of seed, land, blessing,
and kingship are preserved and brought to fulfillment. This paper first demonstrates the
significance of the genealogy, considers the importance of women to it, and finally moves
through narrative analysis and historical-theological exegesis to show how Matthew names each
one in a crescendo arriving at the birth of Jesus Christ, the Messiah.

Membership Class
If you're interested in pursuing membership at GLBC, the link below is how you can start that process. Membership at GLBC is significant and the process can be seen below. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out
- Step One – Attend the Prospective Members class in person.
- We try to offer this every couple of months to allow people without commitments to understand the commitments of our church.
- Step Two – Having attended, read, and being in substantial agreement with the church’s central documents.
- Step Three – Membership interview with the Pastor and at least two current members.
- The term “interview” is far too formal. It’s basically just a time for us to hear you testimony of salvation, verify that you’ve been baptized, talk through the Gospel, and share my heart.
- Step Four – After the interview you will be referred to the entire leadership team.
- Step Five – Upon review, the leadership team makes a formal motion to the congregation to receive you into membership during a private member’s meeting.
- Step Six – Right hand of fellowship is extended on a Sunday morning.
D-Group Resources
A discipleship group (D-Group) is a closed group of believers that gather for the purpose of greater conformity to Jesus Christ. When you commit to a D-Group, you are committing to be challenged in your faith and to daily walk as a disciple of Jesus. Most of what we are used to taking part in involves sitting back and allowing someone to teach, but D-Groups are meant to engage you and allow you to walk along with others. A teacher shares information, while a disciple shares life; a teacher aims for the head, while a disciple aims for the heart; a teacher measures knowledge, while a disciple measures faith; a teacher is an authority, while a disciple is a servant; and a teacher says, `Listen to me,’ while a disciple says, ‘Follow me.’
